The woman left behind the treasure and a piece of wood that she had fashioned into a handrail to mark the spot. When others arrived at the location, they found that the money and gold had disappeared, and they were unable to locate the handrail or any footprints. Since then, the location has been considered a sacred and mysterious place, which has become a legend passed down through generations.

Khum Chao Luang
Khum Chao Luang in Mueang Phrae is an architectural masterpiece that boasts of 72 magnificently carved wooden doors and windows. The wooden eaves surrounding the building are also intricately engraved, adding to its grandeur. Constructed in 1892 by Chao Luang Phiriyachai Thepphawong, the residence of the Phrae rulers is now the Governor’s residence on Khum Doem Road. This luxurious two-story building is made of bricks and cement, with logs of hardwood serving as foundation piles instead of pillars. The outstanding feature of this structure is its spaciousness, along with its beautiful woodcarvings found on the windbreak on the gable and eaves boards, as well as fretwork around the premises.
Interestingly, the middle room with no sunlight was used to imprison slaves with serious offenses, while rooms on the left and right wing with little sunlight were used to imprison slaves with petty offenses. Phrae City Pillar is a must-visit destination in the heart of Phrae province or Muang Pae. You can find it on Koom Derm road, close to the City Hall and Nareerat School. The Ministry of Interior’s policy dictated the construction of this new city pillar, which replaces the old one that once served as the City Pillar of Phrae province.
